Where Does All of Your Junk Go?

Taking Away Junk and Where it Ends Up

When you rent a dumpster and hire a junk removal service to get rid of it all, where does it all actually go? Once the removal company comes to pick up the dumpster, many people have no idea where the junk goes from that point. While you may think that all this junk is simply dropped off at the dump, that’s not always the case.

Here is where your junk really goes:

What Can be Donated, is Donated

The junk from a dumpster is thoroughly sorted through. Once it is sorted, some of the items that are in good shape and can be reused are donated to local charities. This gives new life to items that you may not need or use anymore and greatly helps people in need. Some items that you may see as “junk” are not junk at all and can still be enjoyed by others. It is also helpful to make a donation pile before throwing everything into the dumpster. Things that can be donated really include anything that is in good enough shape for someone else to continue to use and enjoy.

Recycling Facility

Most of your junk, if it can’t be donated, can be recycled and repurposed for another use. Items can be broken down and the pieces can be sold in order to be reused in another way. You may be asking yourself which items from your dumpster can be recycled. Anything from refrigerators, TV and computer monitors, mattresses, carpets, and any other appliances or electronics can all be recycled and usually can’t be dropped off at the landfill anyway.

Appliances and electronics usually cannot be dumped in a landfill because many of them can’t really be broken down and contain harmful chemicals that can seep into the ground at a landfill harming the environment and even the surrounding water supply.

Some electronics that should be recycled:

  • VCRs and DVD players
  • Computers and computer monitors
  • TV monitors
  • Printers and fax machines
  • And more…

Some appliances that should be recycled:

  • Air conditioners
  • Dishwashers
  • Refrigerators
  • Microwaves
  • Washing machines and dryers
  • And more…

Yes, Some of it Goes to the Dump/Landfill

While most junk removal companies try to avoid dumping lots of junk in a landfill for environmental reasons, sometimes this is the only place to dispose of certain items. At a landfill, it takes a very long time for junk to be broken down making it an unsightly and environmentally unfriendly place. But once sorted, if the junk removal company can’t see the item being donated, repurposed or recycled, the landfill is really the only place that it can be disposed.
